Workshop Descriptions
|
The Camden Professional Service
Group (PSG) is a voluntary, mutual support group of job-seeking
professionals which is administered by the NJ Department of
Labor & Workforce Development and the Camden County One-Stop Career
Center. Our members come from many backgrounds … operations managers,
consultants, recruiters, trainers, sales & marketing specialists, HR
professionals, IT specialists, engineers, chemists, insurance agents,
writers, web designers, lawyers, business owners, and more. Each month PSG offers several workshops, which you may attend in any order. (If
you’re in the process of revising your resume or are recently in
transition, we recommend beginning with Resume Workshop I.)
|
Resume I & Personal Assessment Workshop
(Telling Your Story)
|
This Resume Workshop will help you
present your skills to a prospective employer in written format. It
touches on issues for the job-seeker such as the emotions of job loss,
getting organized for the job search, branding,
Challenge-Action-Result (CAR Theory), and employers’ expectations for
resumes in the electronic age. Topics include, but are not limited to:
presenting your accomplishments in a professional style, information
to include and exclude, chronological vs. functional style,
appropriate length, typeface and font size, along with Plain Text
formatting tips for online submission. The value of doing a personal
assessment is discussed, with an explanation of the process.
|
Resume Critique
|
In this informal session you will
pass around your “resume-in-progress” for comments and suggestions
from fellow PSG members. It is an excellent opportunity to ask for
specific feedback on sections you may be struggling with. Many members
attend this session more than once, as they continually work upon
improving their resume.
|
Personal Marketing Plan Workshop
|
Being out of work is no vacation. You can get back to work sooner by
uncovering the 80% of successful job search efforts that are not
advertised. This workshop will help you assess your skills and job
preferences, select target industries and companies, and set up a plan
to stay motivated and organized while marketing yourself through all
the avenues available.
|
Networking Workshop
|
You will develop or refine your
critical ‘Elevator Speech’, learn how to build your network and work
your contacts. You will learn to recognize a contact when you meet one
(shh! everyone is a contact) and learn what to do, what to say, how to
follow up, to make that contact count.
|
Interview Workshop
|
During a typical job search, more
than one representative of the hiring company may interview you, e.g.,
external recruiter/search firm, company HR recruiter, hiring manager,
and/or search committee. Since there is no way to predict the
questions an Interviewer may ask, we suggest being prepared for
anything. The Interview Workshop is designed to help you verbally
present your skills to prospective employers, learning to back up your
resume claims by developing thoughtful responses to typical behavioral
interview questions. Other topics include the telephone interview,
proper attire for face-to-face interviews, follow-up etiquette, use of
business cards, thank you notes, and related questions.
|
Interview Role Play
|
The Interview Role Play gives you
an opportunity to answer typical interview questions through
role-playing with fellow PSG members or HR professionals who serve as
Mock Interviewers. Hearing the responses of others can help you
develop and refine your own answers. Regular face-to-face practice is
the best way to build confidence and prepare for the “real thing”.
|
LinkedIn (Professional E-Networking) Workshop
|
This workshop will discuss how
fast-growing social networking sites can be used as part of the job
search process. Emphasis is on learning how to effectively use
LinkedIn, the leading social networking site for professionals. (Note
that participation in LinkedIn is totally optional and is not a
requirement for membership in PSG.)
|
Guest Speakers, Special Topics & Networking Events
|
| The Facilitator regularly invites
Guest Speakers to present topics at the monthly Mandatory Meeting and
other events. Networking events are scheduled regularly. At the
Facilitator’s discretion, various other workshops are arranged when
opportunities present themselves and suitable presenters are available
to lead them. |
